Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) is committed to promoting sustainable development through effective governance, inclusivity, justice, and transparency. This will ensure peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16). The Sustainable Development Goals (“SDG”) are the blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all because they address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.

The KsTU policy framework on SGDs aims at incorporating the SDG 8 into the university’s institutional strategies, both in management and in teaching, and research. The KsTU SDG 8 policy aims to ensure sustainable campus management at KsTU. In line with the SDG 8, a study was conducted into the economic activities, employment practices and working conditions at KsTU and these are presented below: 

The university is increasingly exploring opportunities to improve its environmental management with the view to reduce its carbon footprint, reduce energy wastage and pollution, promote sustainable consumption, and increase renewable energy generation and consumption. Already, a green campus document has been prepared which is expected to provide a broader framework for all sustainable measures and interventions required to make the university carbon neutral in the foreseeable future.

The aim of this policy document is to provide a framework for the promotion of sustainable management of water and sanitation within the University community and its environs in alignment with SDG 6 to ensure the University’s contribution to the global effort on clean and adequate access to water and sanitation for all.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is universal, comprehensive, and inseparable, with Kumasi Technical University’s (KsTU) core objective of ensuring no one is left behind. Central to this agenda is SDG 4, which aims to guarantee inclusive, equitable quality education and foster lifelong learning for everyone. Education is pivotal in creating sustainable, inclusive, and resilient societies. SDG 4 seeks to elevate these efforts, positioning education as a driving force for broader sustainable development. Recognized as a fundamental right essential to human dignity, education under SDG 4 is intricately linked with the entire 2030 Agenda. Providing access to quality education is crucial for social mobility and reducing inequalities.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 3) focuses on Good Health and Well-Being. It emphasizes access to essential health care services; ending epidemics such as AIDS, TB, malaria and others; reducing death from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promoting mental health and well-being; preventing substance abuse, including narcotic drug and harmful use of alcohol; ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services; supporting research and development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and noncommunicable diseases; increasing health financing and the recruitment, development, training and retention of the health workforce; reducing accidents.

Gender Equality and Diversity Policy of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) seeks to build a diverse workforce and to ensure that prospective employees and employees are not discriminated against on the grounds of age, gender, marital or civil partnership status, pregnancy, maternity, family responsibilities, stature, political beliefs and/or affiliation, race, ethnicity, religion, and disability. KsTU shall contribute to empowerment, self-sufficiency, fair treatment, and continuous professional development, including contributing towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (Goals 5, 8, 10,16 and 17).

This policy describes KsTU’s commitments to reduce operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions supporting Global and Ghana’s climate goals to address the climate crisis while mitigating impacts on vulnerable populations. The policy further proposes activities to engage staff, students, and other stakeholders in climate action and awareness. The CAPS establishes strategies in eight (8) operational areas of climate action: energy, transportation, building, administration and operations, waste management, procurement, food & water services, and Climate action education.
